Proceedures:
Always use the purist, freshest ingredients and don’t be afraid to experiment or substitute! Some of my most powerful blends have been created on the spur of the moment! Remember to visualize your goal as you work and an invocation to an apprpriate Diety is always an extra oomph as you finish. Take a look through the Herbal Grimoire for ideas to use for your own blends and be sure to keep notes so you can repeat them (and send your successes to us!)
Bath salts: Mix oils or tinctures into a base consisting of 3 parts Epsom Salts, 2 parts Baking Soda and 1 part Salt (I prefer sea salt for purification). Mix well, preferrably in a glass bowl while visualizing your intention or saying an invocation (I use the standard doesil (clockwise) stir for things I want to draw to me, widdershins (counter-clockwise) stir for banishing things. If you want to tint them (see color correspondences), add up to 11 drops of food color. I finish with an invocation for the purpose and stiring in a pentacle.
Incense: The simplest incense is herbs sprinkled on a piece of self-igniting charcoal. If you want to be more industrious, you can mix ground herbs with a base of gume tragacanth glue or mucilage to form it into sticks, cones or blocks. Gum Tragacanth is available at some herb stores - it’s rather expensive, but will last for months. To make the glue, put a teaspoon of the ground herb in a glass of warm water - mix thoroughly. Let it absorb the water until it becomes a thick, bitter-smelling paste. Experiment with consistency to find something you like. Cover with a wet cloth and set aside. Then add a combustable base of 6 parts ground charcoal (not the self-igniting kind), 1 part ground benzoin, 2 parts ground sandalwood, 1 part ground orris root, 6 drops essential oil, 2 to 4 parts mixed, empowered base.
Oils: Popular these days for aromatherapy, use the purist oils you can find. I prefer a base of Jojoba oil as it doesn’t spoil but you can also use Almond, Olive, or even regular vegetable oil. You can also blend in herbs (mix in a mortal and pestle for best results then strain through cheesecloth.
Potions: Generally, potions are created by using spring water as a base in your cauldron or other mixing container (consecrated is always good). Herbs or oils are added one at a time while visualizing your intent and heating gently. The simpliest is to pour hot or boiling water over herbs and then allowing them to steep like you would tea. Most use one teaspoon of dried herb per cup of water.
Powders: One of the easiest recipes to make, simple through the herbs in your mortal and pestle and pound/grind it super fine. Again you should work while visualizing your goal.
